There was a streak beneath a gutter that had been overflowing. Ashley pointed out that cleaning the wall wouldn't stop it getting wet again, so we dealt with the gutter separately.

Once that was sorted, the render treatment made a worthwhile difference. A faint mark remains, as warned. I appreciated the advice because otherwise I might have paid for a clean while leaving the cause untouched.
